What Java Signing Does

Java code signing allows you to attach your verified digital identity to Java-based software and files (e.g., .java, .jar, .cab, etc.). It enables you, as a software developer or publisher, to achieve three things:

  • Authentication: Proves your software, executable, or file is legit and was created by you (no one else).
  • Data integrity: Proves your software hasn’t been manipulated or altered since you signed it using public key cryptography.

When you create a new Java application, it’s unauthenticated — meaning that there’s no way to prove that the software came from you. So, virtually anyone could fraudulently attach your brand name or logo to their phony app and call it a day, and your users wouldn’t know that it didn’t come from you. Authentication prevents this by using public key cryptography to prove that it really came from you.

But this isn’t the only thing that Java code signing helps to prevent; it also proves that your software hasn’t been altered or tampered with. Imagine that you’ve just released an unsigned application and then someone adds malicious code to it and re-releases it in your brand’s name.
