Compare Java Code Signing Certificates

Digitally sign your .jar and other Java files using a Java Code Signing Certificate for as little as $195 per year (save 20% off retail).

Java can be used to create everything from Windows executable and installer files to software that runs on Linux and other systems. But when you don’t sign them, the dreaded “Unknown Publisher” and/or unsigned application warnings pop up and plunge your download and installation rates.

Eliminate these warnings quickly and easily using a standard or extended validation (EV) Java Code Signing Certificate. This approach proves your verified digital identity to Windows systems and browsers.

Still not convinced? Discover what Java signing is and why it’s necessary as a software provider in today’s digital world.

What Is Java Code Signing?

Java is a popular and versatile platform programming language that works across numerous operating systems and devices. It’s used for developing everything from mobile apps and computer games to enterprise software and IoT devices.

Java code signing certificates can be used to sign and timestamp many types of files (.java, .jar, .msi, .exe, etc.). Examples of some of the signing applications include:

This digital certificate is issued by a publicly trusted certificate authority and is trusted by Microsoft Windows (meaning that the CA’s root certificates are stored in the Windows root store) because the CA meets stringent security guidelines and audits.

  • Software applications
  • Applets and JWS files (although they’re technically obsolete, you can still find some in the wild)
  • Installer files and updates
  • Industrial device drivers
  • Plugins

What Java Signing Does

Java code signing allows you to attach your verified digital identity to Java-based software and files (e.g., .java, .jar, .cab, etc.). It enables you, as a software developer or publisher, to achieve three things:

  • Authentication: Proves your software, executable, or file is legit and was created by you (no one else).
  • Data integrity: Proves your software hasn’t been manipulated or altered since you signed it using public key cryptography.

When you create a new Java application, it’s unauthenticated — meaning that there’s no way to prove that the software came from you. So, virtually anyone could fraudulently attach your brand name or logo to their phony app and call it a day, and your users wouldn’t know that it didn’t come from you. Authentication prevents this by using public key cryptography to prove that it really came from you.

But this isn’t the only thing that Java code signing helps to prevent; it also proves that your software hasn’t been altered or tampered with. Imagine that you’ve just released an unsigned application and then someone adds malicious code to it and re-releases it in your brand’s name. Your brand’s reputation will suffer, and you’ll lose customer trust. This helps prevent that from happening.

Why Is Java Signing Necessary?

Is Java code signing a requirement? Technically, no. But in addition to preventing bad guys from messing with your software, Java code signing helps prevent unwanted warning messages from being displayed whenever someone tries to install your application. If you don’t sign your Java application or sign it using an untrusted (e.g., self-signed) code signing certificate and try to share it publicly, it’ll warn users that your app isn’t trusted.

Let’s take a look at a couple of examples. The first is a set of Microsoft’s User Account Control (UAC) screenshots:

A comparison graphic that shows the difference between unsigned (left) and digitally signed (right) executables.

See the difference between the two files? The one on the right shows Microsoft Corporation’s verified digital identity. Now, let’s see what happens when you try to open a Java-based file that’s not signed and is not trusted by Microsoft SmartScreen:

A screenshot of the Windows Defender SmartScreen message that can trigger for unsigned software

This unsightly warning message doesn’t display for software applications that are signed using an EV code signing certificate because Microsoft’s Defender security system automatically trusts the software’s digital signature.

Benefits of Using a Java Code Signing Certificate

To recap, there are multiple reasons why you should always sign your Java software projects:

  • Assert your digital identity in a verifiable way.
  • Secure your software code against tampering.
  • Eliminate ugly “unknown publisher” and “unsigned application” warnings.
  • Increase trust in your brand.
  • Improve software installation, update, and adoption rates.

Supported Platforms

There are a few ways to use a Java code signing certificate to add another layer of security to your products. Two of the most popular ways to digitally sign your Java files is using the popular tools SignTool or Jarsigner.

Haven’t installed the Java Software Development Kit (JDK) yet? You’ll need to do so before signing Java software apps or code. You can download the latest long-term support release version from the Oracle Java Downloads page. The Jarsigner tool comes bundled with JDK, so you won’t have to download and install it separately.
